Hollyoaks newcomer Charlotte Riley has spoken out about the fan backlash following her debut as Leah Barnes, a role originally played by Ela-May Demircan. In an exclusive interview with the Mirror, Riley admitted there was "pressure" in taking over the part, as viewers criticised the show for altering the character's personality.
Recast and Character Changes
Hollyoaks bosses decided to recast the role of Leah to take the character in a new direction. Riley explained that the changes to Leah's personality are tied to her time in Los Angeles, where the character has been studying. "People don't like change, myself included, but I think that's why people need to get comfortable with change in that life changes people," Riley said. She added that Leah's newfound confidence and chaotic behaviour are a front, and that viewers will see another side to the character soon.
Riley on Fan Backlash
Riley sympathised with fans who were unhappy about the recast. "There is definitely pressure. I obviously understand it because when you watch your favourite show, and they recast someone, you're like, it's not her! I would be the exact same honestly," she said. She emphasised that the character's evolution is meant to reflect real-life growth and that Leah's past trauma, including the loss of her mother, will still be explored.
Behind the Scenes
Riley also discussed reuniting with her former Coronation Street co-stars Lewis Walton and Brook Debio, who have also joined Hollyoaks. "I love it, it still doesn't feel real and I don't think it ever will," she said, describing her initial feelings of imposter syndrome. She added that she has now settled into the role and is enjoying her time on the soap.
Hollyoaks airs Mondays to Wednesdays on E4 at 7PM and is available to stream on Channel 4.
