Hilary Duff has revealed that her husband, Matthew Koma, saved their relationship by reconnecting with her through the online game Words With Friends. The 38-year-old singer and actress shared the story during an appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast, detailing how Koma used the game to reach out after a period of silence following a heated argument.
Duff explained that the couple first met on a blind date arranged by her A&R representative. Despite an immediate connection, their relationship faced several setbacks, including a split after a nasty fight. Koma refused to speak to her afterwards, leaving Duff frustrated. However, months later, he initiated contact again via Words With Friends, a move that reignited their romance.
“He wouldn’t speak to me and that made me mad … We didn’t talk and then he Words With Friends-ed me a few months later,” Duff said. “I almost wrecked my car I was so excited.” The game, known for its word-based puzzles, became an unexpected tool for reconciliation, with Duff noting Koma’s skill with words.
The couple, who married in 2019, share three children together, in addition to Duff’s son from her previous marriage to ice hockey player Mike Comrie. Duff also revealed that Koma had confessed his love for her after their first date in an email to his manager, which he recently rediscovered and shared with her.
Following their reunion, Koma attended Duff’s 30th birthday party, and the pair took a trip to Utah, where they discussed having children. Just two months later, Duff discovered she was pregnant with their first child together.
