Foo Fighters performed in Liverpool for the first time on Thursday night at Anfield Stadium, the home of Liverpool FC. Despite a sweltering hot day with temperatures soaring into the high 30s Celsius, the energy inside the venue remained electric.
Fans braved the scorching conditions, with some queuing from early afternoon. Free water and factor 50 sunscreen stations were set up around the turnstiles to help attendees cope with the heat. The ECHO spoke to fans ahead of the show, who expressed excitement to see the band live.
Hottest Anfield Stadium Concert?
An amber weather warning was issued for Merseyside ahead of the concert as temperatures spiked across the UK. Liverpool FC issued hot weather guidance, urging fans to stay hydrated and wear sunscreen. Frontman Dave Grohl acknowledged the heat on stage, saying: "You think it's hot now, m************, it's going to get hot. Are you ready?"
The band was supported by Otobebe Beaver and Inhaler before taking the stage around 7:30pm. As the sun set, the conditions relented slightly, allowing fans to enjoy the show.
A Family Affair
The ECHO noticed many families among the crowd. Marissa Tounshen, 29, and her mother Diana Tounshen, 65, traveled from Portland and Illinois respectively to attend. Marissa said: "We took an eight hour flight, a two hour train and a one hour and 45 minute taxi to get here today. We're so excited. I love Dave Grohl, and all of the Foo Fighters. What a treat to see them here, and instead of the States, honestly."
Subtle Tribute to the Reds
Red smoke filled the stadium during the opening moments of the show, in an apparent nod to Liverpool FC. The band launched into their first song, "All My Life," followed by "The Pretender" and "Times Like These."
Sign Language for Fans
Reporter Ryan Paton noted a sign language interpreter in the crowd. BSL interpreters translated not only the lyrics but also the energy of the music. The band performed over 20 songs, all of which were interpreted.
Fans Can Expect All the Hits
The setlist included major hits such as "Best of You," "Learn to Fly," and "My Hero." The ECHO provided live coverage of the event in a dedicated blog. Fans attending the second gig on Saturday can expect a similar experience.
