More than 1,200 schools across the UK were forced to close or operate on reduced hours on Friday, June 26, as a severe heatwave continued to grip the nation. The Met Office extended its heat alert, with temperatures expected to reach 38C in some areas, prompting widespread disruption to education.
Record Temperatures and Wildfires
The heatwave has already broken records, with Wales recording its hottest June temperature ever at 35.6C in Cardiff's Bute Park, while Scotland saw a high of 31.2C in Threave. On Thursday, a massive wildfire broke out in the Peak District as temperatures climbed to 36.7C. Professor Stephen Belcher CBE, Met Office chief scientist, said: “The heatwave this week is a significant weather event, with a Red Extreme Heat warning issued. Human induced climate change has made events like this more likely and more intense.” He added, “To see temperatures like this in the UK in June is sobering. Events like this bring home the implications of climate change, with very high temperatures and humidity bringing significant health implications from heat stress, as well as impacts to a range of sectors such as transport, energy and water supply.”
