Former GMTV presenter Fiona Phillips has shared the devastating reality of her husband Martin Frizell's early-onset Alzheimer's diagnosis, describing it as a "daily torment" for their family.
The 62-year-old broadcaster revealed that her This Morning editor husband, 63, was diagnosed with the condition 18 months ago after experiencing brain fog and anxiety symptoms.
The Shocking Diagnosis
"It's been a gradual process," Fiona explained. "At first we thought it was just work stress - Martin has always been so sharp, so capable. Then the forgetfulness became more frequent, more concerning."
The couple, married for 25 years, initially kept the diagnosis private while coming to terms with the life-changing news.
Daily Challenges
Fiona described how the disease has transformed their daily lives:
- Martin struggles with routine tasks he once performed effortlessly
- The former editor experiences moments of confusion in familiar environments
- Simple decisions have become overwhelming
- Their family dynamic has shifted dramatically
"There are good days and bad days," Fiona admitted. "On his better days, we can almost pretend everything's normal. Then there are moments when the reality hits us like a ton of bricks."
A Family's Resilience
The couple's two adult sons have been instrumental in supporting both parents through the challenges. "The boys have been amazing," Fiona said. "But it's heartbreaking to see them witness their father's decline."
Fiona has become increasingly vocal about the need for better dementia support services, particularly for younger patients. "The system isn't equipped for people in their 60s, let alone younger," she stressed.
Despite the difficulties, the family remains determined to make the most of their time together. "We're taking things day by day," Fiona said. "Creating happy moments where we can."
