Brian Robson, a 63-year-old England superfan from Ashington, Northumberland, died of cancer just weeks before the 2026 World Cup. Despite his death, his flag and photo were displayed at every Three Lions match in the United States, carried by fellow supporters who wanted him to remain with the team in spirit.
Lifelong Dedication to the Three Lions
Robson had followed England for decades, attending tournaments around the world. He was a 'top capper', a highly dedicated member of the England fans' club, which secured him a ticket for the World Cup final in the US. He also attended the 2018 World Cup in Russia and the 2022 tournament in Qatar, along with multiple European Championships.
His travels took him from his hometown to Serbia, Kosovo, North Macedonia, San Marino, Albania, Lithuania, Portugal, and Czechia. He became a beloved figure within the England fans' team, helping organize matches against supporters' sides globally.
Flag Carried by Friends
Close friend Garford Beck, 64, of London, said: "We wanted him here with us and carried his flag and photo everywhere." Mark Trigg, 52, a chef from Derby, added: "He is not forgotten."
Robson's flag was seen at the England game in New York/New Jersey and in Mexico. His son Lewis, 28, recalled his father's passion: "He was expecting to be in the US and had his ticket for the final in case England got there. He was a super fan, in the top percentile, so he received the best ticket deal."
Memories of a Football Life
Lewis shared memories of watching England v France at Euro 2004 in Portugal when he was seven, and noted his father's attendance at the 2006 World Cup in Germany, Euro 2012, and both the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. "He traveled to parts of the world which he would never normally have seen, like Serbia, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Azerbaijan and San Marino," Lewis said.
Robson, a factory worker, was often spotted on TV coverage with his Ashington flag. He also followed Newcastle United, with his father Brian Snr, now 90, living just two streets away from the famous Charlton brothers, Jack and Sir Bobby.
