Emmerdale star Tony Audenshaw, known for playing Bob Hope on the ITV soap, has a remarkable backstory that includes homelessness before finding fame. The actor has become a beloved figure on the show, appearing in over 2,500 episodes since his debut in 2000.
Homeless Beginnings
In 2019, Audenshaw revealed on Loose Women that he was homeless in the 1980s while working at Thorpe Park. Unable to afford a B&B, he often slept in his car to save money. He described the experience: "There were occasions where I didn’t have enough for a B&B, so I just parked up and tried to get some kip. It wasn’t easy, but you do what you have to do." He alternated between a B&B and his car, noting that sleeping in the car two nights in a row was too difficult to function properly.
Rise to Fame on Emmerdale
Audenshaw's perseverance paid off. After a minor role in Brookside in the mid-1990s, he first appeared on Emmerdale in 1996 in a small part before landing the role of Bob Hope in 2000. Since then, he has become one of the soap's longest-serving cast members, with reports suggesting he earns between £400 and £2,000 per episode. Annual salaries for top stars can exceed £200,000.
World Record and Personal Life
Beyond acting, Audenshaw is an avid runner. In 2010, he ran the London Marathon in a giant baby outfit, finishing in 3 hours and 13 minutes and earning a Guinness World Record for fastest marathon dressed as a baby, though the record has since been broken. Running was a shared passion with his late wife Ruth, who died of cancer in April 2017 at age 43. They had been married since 1996 and had two children, George and Emily.
Emmerdale airs weeknights at 8:00 pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
