Former Emmerdale actor Shaun Thomas appears almost unrecognisable in his latest professional venture, a full eight years after his dramatic departure from the popular ITV soap opera. The 28-year-old performer, best known to audiences for his portrayal of Gerry Roberts, has undergone a significant transformation for a new role in the highly anticipated HBO series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
From Soap Cellmate to Fantasy Knight
Thomas originally joined the cast of Emmerdale in 2017, initially slated for a mere two-episode stint. His character, Gerry Roberts, was introduced as the cellmate of Lachlan White, played by Thomas Atkinson, at Skipdale Young Offenders Institute. Lachlan was awaiting trial for the attempted murder of his grandfather, Lawrence White, portrayed by John Bowe.
The storyline quickly developed, revealing that Gerry and Lachlan were conspirators. Their plot involved manipulating Lachlan's mother, Chrissie White, played by Louise Marwood, into feeling profound guilt over her son's incarceration, leading her to offer numerous gifts. Following his release, Gerry arrived in the village seeking Lachlan, and Chrissie permitted him a brief stay at Home Farm.
A Brutal and Unexpected Exit
Gerry Roberts' time in the Dales was abruptly and violently cut short. Fearing his secrets would be exposed, Lachlan White murdered Gerry by bludgeoning him with a brick at the local bed and breakfast. This shocking demise marked the end of Thomas's 18-month tenure on the show.
Reflecting on his exit at the time, Shaun Thomas revealed that the decision to kill off his character was not his own. "It were a shock because I was only meant to come here for two episodes in the prison scenes with Lachlan, and then I ended up staying here for a year and a half," Thomas told Metro.co.uk. "So I really got used to being around everybody and making a connection with everybody. And then to be told that it would be coming to an end, it were pretty upsetting."
A Dramatic New Chapter in Westeros
Now, eight years later, Shaun Thomas has embarked on a major new chapter in his acting career, one that has visibly transformed his appearance. He has landed the role of Ser Raymun 'The Reluctant' Fossoway in HBO's A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, a prequel series to the global phenomenon Game of Thrones, created by Ira Parker and George R. R. Martin.
The actor has been actively promoting the new series, appearing at various industry events and walking red carpets, showcasing his markedly different look for the fantasy epic.
Building a Diverse Portfolio
Since his departure from Emmerdale, Thomas has steadily built an impressive and varied portfolio of work. His post-soap credits include:
- Appearances in BBC dramas like Casualty and The Long Shadow.
- A role in the harrowing true-crime series Four Lives.
- Performances in comedies such as Ladhood.
- A standout part in the critically acclaimed film How to Have Sex.
- Roles in productions like Rocket Fuel and The Choral.
This body of work demonstrates his range and dedication to his craft, paving the way for his latest high-profile venture into the world of epic fantasy television. Emmerdale continues to air on weeknights at 8pm on ITV and ITVX.
