A previously unseen letter written by Princess Diana has revealed her hope that her sons, William and Harry, would learn to communicate on a 'deeper level'. The two-page handwritten letter, dated November 1995, was sent to a fan named Michael Barrett, who had written to her following her controversial BBC Panorama interview.
In the letter, Diana expressed her gratitude for Barrett's supportive words and said she was 'touched by the contents and by his profound words'. She wrote that she looked forward to the future and to 'sharing with and teaching William and Harry the importance of communication on a deeper level'. The letter concludes with 'With my best wishes, Yours sincerely, Diana'.
The letter is being auctioned by Reeman Dansies 'Royalty, Antiques & Fine Art' and is expected to fetch between £3,000 and £4,000. It will go under the hammer on June 9. The auction house described the letter as 'an important handwritten two page letter' written one week after the Panorama interview, which aired on November 20, 1995.
Barrett, who was moved by the interview, sent Diana a letter of support. To his surprise, he received a reply a week later, which he treasured ever since. Diana died in a car crash in Paris in August 1997 at the age of 36.
The Panorama interview later became the subject of a scandal after it was revealed that journalist Martin Bashir had used deceit to secure it. A BBC inquiry in 2021 found Bashir guilty of breaching editorial conduct, and he left the BBC in May 2021 citing health issues.
