When Cody Linley first appeared as Miley Cyrus' charming love interest Jake Ryan in the hit Disney Channel series Hannah Montana back in 2006, he instantly captured the hearts of millions of young viewers worldwide. Now, nearly two decades later, the actor has undergone a significant transformation from his teen heartthrob days while reflecting on the enduring impact of his role.
From Disney Star to Director: A Career Evolution
Now 36 years old, Linley recently appeared on the Reel Appreciation podcast where he took a nostalgic journey through his time on the beloved series. He portrayed Cyrus' on-and-off boyfriend for 10 episodes across multiple seasons, a role that catapulted him to international fame practically overnight. His combination of good looks and captivating personality made him the first crush for countless teenagers around the globe.
"At that age, I was just showing up and doing my best to tell the truth in the scenes," Linley recalled during the podcast interview. "So knowing that years later I'm still a part of people's memories is an honor."
A Changed Appearance
While Linley still possesses the same handsome smile and piercing green eyes that made him famous, his appearance has notably evolved over the past twenty years. His once sweeping blond hair has been replaced with cropped brown locks, marking a distinct departure from his Disney Channel persona.
The actor admitted that he doesn't consider himself a celebrity, which makes fan recognition all the more meaningful when it occurs. "I'm just a regular guy. And so if I ever get recognized as Jake Ryan, it's a mind-boggling experience," he explained. "To be a part of something that has stood the test of time nearly two decades later and has made an impact on people and is still a crucial part of their life is an honor. It's amazing."
The Power of Storytelling
Linley's perspective on his Hannah Montana experience has deepened with time and maturity. "It's hard to believe, but it reminds me that that's part of the power of film and that's what makes me excited about being a filmmaker now," he shared. "Stories can make a huge impact on people and be life-changing. It certainly was for me to be a part of it. I'm honored."
When specifically asked about "how it felt knowing he played such a heavy part in so many people's childhoods," Linley described the experience as both "humbling and surreal."
How He Landed the Role
During the podcast conversation, Linley revealed the unique circumstances that led to his casting as Jake Ryan. His mother worked as an acting coach who had previously collaborated with Miley Cyrus before her Hannah Montana audition. "I got to meet her at our apartment when they worked together and she was very kind," he remembered.
This prior connection proved beneficial during their chemistry read. "Then I got an audition for the same show about a month or two later... Then I went in for a call back and I had the chemistry read with Miley. It seemed to work out well," Linley explained. "Then I got the job offer and it was for a guest star, possible recur. And it ended up turning into a dozen episodes over four seasons. I had no idea that it was going to turn into what it did and I'm so glad I was a part of it."
Shared Growth with Miley Cyrus
Linley described his time on the show as "very special" and expressed admiration for how far his co-star has progressed in her career. "We both grew up on set together, so we had that shared experience, and I support her," he said warmly. "I'm so glad that she's been able to reinvent herself time and time again and stay authentic. Now she's got a couple Grammys. She's amazing and she always was extremely talented."
Career Shift and Future Projects
In recent years, Linley's acting career has slowed down as he has redirected his focus toward directing. He currently has two short films in development that he both wrote and directed, marking a new creative chapter in his professional life.
When questioned about potentially reprising his role in a Hannah Montana reboot, Linley confirmed he would "love" to return if the opportunity presented itself. As for what his character Jake Ryan might be doing today, he speculated: "Maybe he would be directing like I'm doing."
However, he expressed doubt about whether Jake and Miley's characters would still be together, referencing their complicated on-screen romance that famously ended after Jake's infidelity. "Jake did her dirty in the end," he joked. "I'm just going to leave it up to fans speculation on that one. It was a bittersweet ending."
Before and After Hannah Montana
Prior to his breakthrough role on Hannah Montana, Linley appeared in numerous films and television shows including:
- My Dog Skip
- Where the Heart Is
- Walker, Texas Ranger
- Miss Congeniality
- Cheaper by the Dozen
- Hoot
Following his Disney Channel success, Linley continued his acting career with roles in the horror film Forget Me Not, the series Melissa & Joey, the 2012 drama The Playroom, and both Sharknado: The 4th Awakens and Sharknado 5: Global Swarming.
He also showcased his dancing skills in 2008 when he competed on Dancing With the Stars alongside professional dancer Julianne Hough, ultimately finishing in fourth place.
Today, as Linley transitions from actor to filmmaker, he carries with him the profound understanding of how fictional stories can shape real lives—a lesson learned firsthand through his experience as part of a cultural phenomenon that continues to resonate with audiences nearly twenty years after its debut.
