Claire Sweeney Confirms No Death in Corrie Exit

Coronation Street star Claire Sweeney has confirmed that her character Cassie Plummer will not be killed off, hinting at a possible return after her explosive exit storyline.

Appearing on Good Morning Britain on Monday, July 13, Sweeney revealed she has received a "fantastic" exit line and described the role as a "dream" to play. Speaking to presenters Susanna Reid and Ed Balls, the actress said: "It's a dream role, and Corrie were wonderful, they gave me the most fantastic exit storyline. It couldn't have been better really, it's lovely!"

Explosive Exit with Redemption Arc

When asked for details about her departure, Sweeney teased: "I can say it's explosive, it's dramatic, it's quite sad as well in parts. I think there is potentially a redemption arc as well for Cassie." Ed Balls probed whether her story was "totally final," to which Sweeney replied: "I don't die. So, who knows, who knows."

Susanna Reid expressed skepticism, noting that writers "could do anything they like," but Sweeney expressed hope they wouldn't kill her off, declaring: "I really love Corrie."

Character Background

Sweeney first appeared on the cobbles in April 2023, with her character Cassandra Plummer airing two months later in June. Cassie was introduced as Tyrone Dobbs' biological mother. Upon joining the cast, Sweeney said: "Even though I've been lucky enough to have enjoyed an amazingly varied career for nearly 40 years, being cast in Coronation Street is, to me, better than being cast in a Hollywood movie!"

She added: "I was really nervous when I got the scripts to audition as this show means so much to me and my family and this is Corrie gold. I was beyond thrilled and very grateful when I got the call that Iain MacLeod is trusting me to play Tyrone's Mum and work alongside one of my heroes, Dame Maureen Lipman."

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV1.
