Claire Sweeney Won't Be Killed Off in Corrie Exit

Claire Sweeney has confirmed that her Coronation Street character Cassie Plummer will not be killed off, as she prepares to leave the ITV soap with an 'explosive' and 'dramatic' exit storyline. Speaking on Good Morning Britain on Monday, July 13, the actress revealed that the show's writers gave her a 'fantastic' departure arc, which she described as a 'dream' to play.

Claire Sweeney's Exit Details

Sweeney, who joined the cast in April 2023 and debuted as Cassie Plummer in June 2023, played the biological mother of Tyrone Dobbs. During her interview with hosts Susanna Reid and Ed Balls, she said: 'It's a dream role, and Corrie were wonderful, they gave me the most fantastic exit storyline. It couldn't have been better really, it's lovely!'

When asked for details, Sweeney replied: 'I can say it's explosive, it's dramatic, it's quite sad as well in parts. I think there is potentially a redemption arc as well for Cassie.' She confirmed that her character does not die, leaving the door open for a possible return.

Reaction and Future Possibilities

Susanna Reid expressed scepticism, noting that writers 'could do anything they like' to eliminate the character. Sweeney agreed but hinted at her desire to stay, saying 'I really love Corrie.'

Upon her casting announcement, Sweeney said: 'Even though I've been lucky enough to have enjoyed an amazingly varied career for nearly 40 years, being cast in Coronation Street is, to me, better than being cast in a Hollywood movie! I've watched it all my life and can't quite believe that I'll now be stepping onto those famous cobbles myself.'

She added that she felt pressure auditioning for the role, as the show is special to her family. Producer Iain MacLeod cast her as Tyrone's mum, allowing her to work with acting idol Dame Maureen Lipman. Sweeney said: 'Cassie is a character who is definitely going to make an impact - I just hope the audience will enjoy watching her as much as I'm going to be enjoying playing her!'

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV1.
