Christina Applegate Breaks Silence on Childhood Trauma in New Memoir
For the first time, actress Christina Applegate has publicly detailed the molestation and abuse she endured as a child in her forthcoming memoir, You With The Sad Eyes, set for release next Tuesday. The 54-year-old star of Married with Children described the writing process as opening old wounds, yet she remains determined to share her story.
Confronting Painful Memories
In an exclusive cover story with People magazine, Applegate admitted that penning the 304-page tell-all was emotionally taxing. 'To be honest, it's actually opened up so many wounds, and it's okay because I'm a strong girl, I'm going to get through it,' she stated. However, she clarified that the experience wasn't cathartic in a simple sense. 'It was the stuff that I'd never talked about. The stuff that was behind closed doors and that no one but the closest people in my life have ever known happened.'
After completing the manuscript, Applegate confessed to feeling hesitant about its publication. 'The pen down on the table afterwards was like, "Oh, I just wrote all this stuff, but now, I don't want anyone to read it."'
Details of Childhood Abuse
The Emmy-winning actress revealed she was molested by a female babysitter at the age of five while her mother, Nancy Priddy, who struggled with heroin addiction, was absent. Applegate wrote in her book, 'I knew every part of it was wrong. I felt sick and scared and sad.' This trauma has had a lasting impact, as she explained, 'I never fully felt comfortable being touched, and that's true still. I've never felt comfortable with it my whole life, really, and all because of that girl forcing me to do something I barely understood but that I knew was shameful.'
Additionally, Applegate's childhood was marred by a physically abusive boyfriend of her single mother, who also directed violence towards her. Reflecting on her early years, she said, 'I think I had kind of the worst situation from three to seven. But there was stuff like that going on in all our homes. Single moms, men coming in and out, drugs.'
A Story of Resilience and Empowerment
Applegate framed her memoir as a narrative of survival and strength. '[My story] is about a little girl with sad eyes who ended up becoming Christina Applegate. And she still has those sad eyes. But she's a stronger, different, resilient human being.' She hopes that You With The Sad Eyes will inspire others who have faced similar abuse, offering them hope and empowerment.
Addressing potential criticism, Applegate responded firmly, 'I had someone say to me, "Are you doing this because you're being a victim?" I'm like, "No, I'm empowering other people out there." At least I hope to.'
Current Health Struggles and Family Life
In 2021, Applegate was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, a condition that now confines her largely to bed as she manages chronic pain. Despite this, she prioritizes her role as a mother to her 15-year-old daughter, Sadie. '[I don't] buy into this thing of you shouldn't be your kid's friend,' she remarked. 'Because I am, especially now. I'm her biggest supporter. I fight for her at every turn. And I drive her to school blaring Sex and Candy by Marcy Playground. That's kind of me in a nutshell.'
Applegate cherishes moments of laughter with Sadie, even sharing humorous anecdotes like putting on a diaper with a smiley face drawn on her belly to amuse her daughter. She is married to Dutch bassist Martyn LeNoble, with whom she recently celebrated their 13th wedding anniversary.
Career Highlights and Personal Milestones
Applegate rose to fame playing Kelly Bundy on the long-running sitcom Married... with Children from 1987 to 1997. Her career spans numerous television roles, including Heart of the City, Jesse, Samantha Who?, and the Netflix series Dead to Me. On the big screen, she has appeared in films such as Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead, Mars Attacks!, and the Anchorman series.
A breast cancer survivor, Applegate has hinted she may never act on camera again due to her health. Her memoir marks a significant personal milestone, blending her journey through childhood trauma, Hollywood success, and ongoing health challenges into a powerful narrative of resilience.
