Carol Vorderman feared heart issue after burnout hospital stay

Carol Vorderman has opened up about her health worries, just over two years after she had to take a break from work for medical reasons. The former Countdown host, 65, was recently seen at the Pride of Britain Awards, but earlier this year spoke about her recovery behind the scenes.

Hospital Admission and Heart Fears

The star recalled advice she received from her doctor after being hospitalised in September 2024. She admitted that during a debrief with a medical professional, they told her her metaphorical fuel tank was low.

Carol told woman&home: “Becoming ill was a blessing because it reset things in my life. I hit burnout and ended up in hospital in September 2024.

“I had chest pains and thankfully my heart was fine, but doctors said I had nothing left in the tank, so I had to give up my LBC show. I was sad but thought, ‘Next time it could be my heart’.”

Lifestyle Changes After the Scare

Carol previously spoke to Good Housekeeping about changes she made shortly after her health scare, which included slimming down her work schedule and improving her diet.

On the former, she remarked: “It was a real shock. I changed everything after that. I gave up LBC; I really quietened down my work. It was like an intervention, and I’m so grateful for it. I’m one of those people who needs a shock in order to change something.”

On the latter, Carol said she had added an intriguing vegetable to her diet, one many associate with Christmas.

She said: “I have a bag of sprouts a day when I’m at home! I’m addicted to sprouts. I also make sure half of my plate is vegetables. And I never buy bread, because I could eat bread all day.”

Regular Scans and Fitness Focus

Carol also said that, in combination with changing her diet and work schedule, she was having regular scans to make sure everything was in order. She said her aim was to make sure she wasn’t one of those people who was falling down in their mid-70s.

Part of that is making sure she is strong enough and has the right muscles to keep her body steady. She has, in recent months, posted photographs of herself on social media hitting the gym.

Carol is set to return to the UK’s screens in a televised screening of the Pride of Britain Awards tonight (October 22nd) at 8pm on ITV.
