Bunnie Xo's Harrowing Past: From Trailer Park Trauma to Podcast Stardom
Alyssa 'Bunnie Xo' DeFord, widely recognised for her marriage to musician Jelly Roll and hosting the popular podcast Dumb Blonde, first endured a violent and troubled upbringing that she had to escape. The 46-year-old Las Vegas native grew up in a trailer park, where she suffered severe child abuse from her stepmother's family, forcing her to leave home by the age of 14.
A Childhood Shaped by Violence
In a recent interview with People, Bunnie Xo reflected on her early years, stating, "I don't think any child deserves to grow up around violence. It shapes them into a different human." She described herself as "weirdly delusional" since childhood, maintaining a belief that everything would work out despite others predicting her downfall. "There were so many people who wanted to see my downfall, and I was like, 'Just wait. My time will come.'"
Descent into Prostitution and Addiction
Her life spiralled into prostitution and drug addiction, leading to an abortion at 16, sexual assault, homelessness, and seven arrests between 1999 and 2006. On Instagram, she confessed that her last arrest at age 26 was for soliciting an undercover police officer on a casino floor. Bunnie Xo, who now boasts over 18 million social media followers, recounted the depths of her addiction: "I can still see the drugs in my skin, the bloodshot eyes, the hollow look that comes when you've stopped caring if you wake up tomorrow. I was deep in addiction, lost in survival mode."
Turning Point and Self-Realisation
The former escort, who admitted to robbing customers, reached a breaking point. "But, I got sick. Sick of humiliating myself, sick of always having to start over and sick of who I was as a human. I had to stop pointing fingers and realise, two things can be true: I was the problem & the solution." Despite this realisation, she continued working as a high-end escort until 2020 and remained on OnlyFans until 2023, even while in two abusive marriages and after meeting Jelly Roll in 2015, whom she married in 2016.
Search for Love and Survival
Bunnie Xo explained her motivations, saying, "I really was just searching for the love of my father in so many men, and then it became a career. I thought I was taking my power back from the abuse that I'd been through, but really I was just in survival mode." She emphasised taking full responsibility for her actions, noting the importance of sharing both the good and the bad in her testimony.
Jelly Roll's Parallel Struggles
Her husband, Jelly Roll (born Jason Bradley DeFord), has faced his own challenges, having been jailed 40 times starting at age 13 for marijuana possession, with subsequent offenses including probation violations and possession of crack cocaine with intent to resell. He vowed to change his life after the birth of his daughter Bailee Ann, now 17, and is also father to nine-year-old son Noah.
Message of Hope and Resilience
Bunnie Xo offers a message of hope: "It doesn't matter what you've been through. It doesn't matter where you come from. Believe in yourself, and know that you can change your life at any time and at any age. I'm so thankful, and I'm just at a place of peace."
Memoir and Future Endeavours
Her 304-page memoir, Stripped Down: Unfiltered and Unapologetic, is set for release by Dey Street Books, with 40,000 presales already recorded. She will kick off a four-date book tour at 92NY in Manhattan, which is sold out. Meanwhile, Jelly Roll is scheduled to headline La Cura Fest in Mexico and co-headline The Big A** Stadium Tour with Post Malone, showcasing their continued rise in the entertainment industry.
