Bonnie Tyler's Hollyoaks Later Cameo Remembered at 75

Bonnie Tyler, the legendary singer known for hits like 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' and 'Holding Out for a Hero', has died at the age of 75 after battling an illness. While her music career defined her legacy, soap opera fans may also remember her memorable appearance in a 2009 episode of the Hollyoaks spin-off, Hollyoaks Later.

Dream Sequence Duet

In the episode, Tyler appeared in a dream sequence as the 'fairy godmother' to character Carmel McQueen, played by Gemma Merna. The scene saw the two perform a duet of 'Holding Out for a Hero' after Carmel was arrested when an undercover officer mistook her for a prostitute. The spin-off originally aired on Channel 4 from 2008 to 2013 before being revived in 2025.

Turning Down Acting Roles

According to reports, Tyler had been invited to appear on the show for several years but had declined acting roles. 'They’ve asked me for a couple of years but I know I’m no actress,' she told PA at the time. 'I’m comfortable singing in front of thousands of people but put me in a room where I have to act and it’s so difficult for me. I’m like a fish out of water having to say any lines, which I did have to say. I was dying. But it worked out all right.'

Co-Star's Reaction

Actress Gemma Merna, who played Carmel, described working with Tyler as surreal. 'It was just amazing. It was just a bit surreal. Obviously everyone was just like, “Oh my God, Bonnie Tyler’s here!” And we were behaving ourselves while she was there!' Merna told Digital Spy. She added that it was the 'best day' she had at Hollyoaks.

Tyler's cameo remains a beloved moment for fans of the soap, showcasing her willingness to embrace a lighthearted role despite her discomfort with acting. Her passing marks the end of an era for music and television alike.
