Bollywood director Sanjay Gupta dies at 59 after home fall

Bollywood filmmaker Sanjay Gupta, best known for directing hit films including Kaante and Shootout at Lokhandwala, has died aged 59 after suffering a fall at his home.

The director reportedly fell in his kitchen at around 2.30pm, sustaining a serious head injury. His wife and two sons were also at home at the time, but it is understood nobody initially realised what had happened. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear.

A Career in Crime Dramas

Gupta's death marks a devastating loss for Hindi cinema, bringing an end to a career spanning several decades and producing some of Bollywood's best-known crime dramas. He was particularly recognised for his long-running creative partnership with actor Sanjay Dutt, working together on several films including Kaante in 2002, Musafir in 2004, Zinda in 2006 and Shootout at Lokhandwala in 2007.

The latter became one of Gupta's most recognisable projects. Based on the real-life 1991 Lokhandwala Complex shootout, he took on the roles of director, producer and co-writer. He returned to the crime genre with Shootout at Wadala in 2013, another film inspired by real events.

Beyond Action Thrillers

However, Gupta's work was not limited to action-packed crime thrillers. He also explored other genres, directing Jazbaa in 2015, which starred Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and the 2017 romantic action thriller Kaabil, featuring Hrithik Roshan and Yami Gautam. His other credits included anthology film Dus Kahaniyaan in 2007, Acid Factory in 2009 and Mumbai Saga in 2021, which featured John Abraham and Emraan Hashmi.

Away from directing, Gupta also made his mark as a producer through White Feather Films, the production company he founded in 2001. Some of his more recent projects included The Miranda Brothers and Visfot, both released in 2024. The former starred Meezaan Jafri and Harshvardhan Rane, while Visfot featured Riteish Deshmukh and Fardeen Khan.

Early Career and Legacy

Before making his name behind the camera, Gupta worked in post-production and sound design. He also assisted director Pankaj Parashar on projects including the television series Karamchand and the film Jalwa. Over the years, he became known for his distinctive filmmaking style, combining stylised action sequences, gritty crime stories and striking urban settings.

His work helped make him a familiar figure in mainstream Hindi cinema, with films that continued to attract audiences years after their release.
