The BBC has faced complaints from viewers regarding the 'offensive treatment' of weather presenter Carol Kirkwood during her final appearance on BBC Breakfast in April 2026. The broadcaster's fortnightly complaints report revealed that the episode drew complaints, though the exact number was not disclosed as it fell below the threshold of 100.
Carol Kirkwood's Departure After 28 Years
Carol Kirkwood, 64, left the BBC in April after 28 years with the broadcaster, citing a desire to spend more time with her husband, Steve. Her final episode featured a bouquet of flowers, pre-recorded tributes, and a montage of her most embarrassing moments.
Light-Hearted Banter Sparks Complaints
During the broadcast, Kirkwood engaged in playful banter with co-stars. She joked with Naga Munchetty, saying, 'Even you, Nags!' to which Munchetty replied, 'I'm just waiting for the countdown for you to go,' before laughing. Later, Matt Taylor commented that Kirkwood's tea looked like 'baby milk' and noted she had 'really bad jokes.' In a pre-recorded segment, Dan Walker called Kirkwood 'an absolute nightmare.'
BBC's Response
The BBC confirmed that its Executive Complaints Unit (ECU) reviewed the complaints but decided not to uphold them. A spokesperson reiterated that the ECU had no further comment, stating that the complaints were not upheld. The BBC declined additional comment when contacted by the Daily Star.
BBC Breakfast continues to air on BBC iPlayer.
