BBC Breakfast hosts laugh as swimmer interrupts live report

BBC Breakfast presenters Jon Kay and Sarah Campbell were left speechless with laughter on Wednesday morning after a swimmer unexpectedly interrupted a live report on the UK's heatwave.

The incident occurred during a segment with BBC Climate Editor Justin Rowlatt, who was reporting from Devil's Point in Plymouth, where temperatures were expected to reach up to 35 degrees Celsius later in the week.

Live report interrupted

As Rowlatt discussed the causes of the extreme heat, including record-breaking sea surface temperatures and long-term climate change, a man emerged from the water directly behind him. Jon Kay remarked, "Justin, we're sparing a thought as well for the chap who's just emerged from the water behind you."

Rowlatt turned and asked the swimmer, "How was the swim? Was that a good swim?" The man replied, "Lovely. It's really warm this morning." Rowlatt then noted, "It is really warm. We're just doing a thing on ocean temperatures," as the swimmer inadvertently blocked the camera shot.

Studio reaction

Back in the studio, Kay and Campbell were in hysterics. Kay joked, "He's going to get home, isn't he, and his family are going to say, 'Did you realise?'" A speechless Campbell added, "That was brilliant! You couldn't make that up!" Kay concluded, "Proving that the water is a little warmer at the moment."

The lighthearted moment came amid serious coverage of the UK's heatwave, with the Met Office forecasting extreme temperatures. Rowlatt had earlier explained that the clear sunny weather driving the heatwave is part of a broader trend of rising sea temperatures due to climate change.
