Anita Manning, a familiar face on BBC's Bargain Hunt since 2010, has led a groundbreaking career in the antiques trade. The 78-year-old is believed to be Scotland's first female auctioneer, a testament to her five-decade-long contribution to the industry. Manning also appears regularly on Flog It! and Antiques Road Trip.
Early Career and Rise to Prominence
Manning's journey into antiques began in the 1970s when she secured a role as a buyer. Her passion was ignited by her father, who took her to auctions in Glasgow. Before her antiques career, she studied physical education and dance before shifting focus to furniture dealing.
Alongside her daughter Lala, Manning has co-managed Great Western Auctions in Glasgow since 1989. The family-run firm has grown significantly over the years but maintains a personal touch. Manning said: "For as long as I can remember I have been passionate about Art, Antiques and Auctions. The beauty in craftsmanship and design, coupled with the social history of the objects, that I am privileged to handle on a daily basis, has been a continual source of joy."
Personal Life and Transformation
Manning was known for her trademark black bobbed hairstyle but has since undergone a striking transformation, embracing her natural grey hair with an even shorter style. Outside of her TV work, she has a son named Luke who lives in Hong Kong.
Reflecting on her career, Manning added: "The drama and excitement of the auction world has been a most stimulating environment and one I relish being a part of. Great Western Auctions was established in 1989 by myself and my daughter, Lala. Although the company has grown enormously over the last 26 years, we still regard ourselves as a family firm providing a personal experience and dedicated service to our clients."
