Bachelorette Contestant Was Driver in Crash That Paralyzed Former Congressman
A suitor from Taylor Frankie Paul's abruptly cancelled season of The Bachelorette has been revealed as the driver in the devastating 2014 car crash that left former MAGA congressman Madison Cawthorn paralyzed. Brad Ledford, aged 29, was set to compete for Paul's affection on the popular dating show before its sudden cancellation last week.
Reality TV Aspirations Overshadowed by Tragic Past
Ledford's biography for The Bachelorette described him as a "handsome California cowboy" whose horse was his "best friend." However, years before his reality television casting, Ledford was behind the wheel during the April 2014 accident that changed Cawthorn's life forever. Reports indicate that Ledford, then just 17 years old, fell asleep while driving, causing the vehicle to collide with a concrete barricade as Cawthorn slept with his legs positioned on the dashboard.
The crash resulted in Cawthorn, the former North Carolina representative who left Congress in January 2023 after losing the 2022 Republican primary, becoming partially paralyzed. He has used a wheelchair ever since the traumatic incident.
Conflicting Accounts and Eventual Reconciliation
In the years following the accident, Cawthorn's public narrative about that fateful night diverged significantly from Ledford's version of events. During a 2017 speech, Cawthorn emotionally claimed that "my brother... my best friend, he leaves me in a car to die in a fiery tomb."
This assertion has been strongly contested by Ledford and even some members of Cawthorn's own family. In a lawsuit deposition, Ledford provided a starkly different account, stating that he actually rescued Cawthorn from the burning wreckage. "That statement he made was false," Ledford declared. "It hurt very badly that he would say something as false as that. That is not at all what happened. I pulled him out of the car the second that I was able to get out of the car."
Despite years of legal disputes and estrangement following these conflicting stories, the two men have reportedly reconciled in recent times. Ledford was photographed attending Cawthorn's 2020 election celebration, and he informed the Washington Post in 2021 that Cawthorn no longer believed the earlier accusations about the accident.
Bachelorette Cancellation and Domestic Violence Controversy
Ledford's appearance on The Bachelorette was ultimately scrapped when Disney announced the cancellation of season 22 mere days before its scheduled premiere. This decision came after leaked video footage from 2023 showed star Taylor Frankie Paul involved in a domestic violence incident with her former boyfriend, Dakota Mortensen. Paul remains on probation related to that case.
When addressing the show's cancellation on his Instagram Story, Ledford expressed minimal concern about the television program, stating, "I could care less about a TV show not airing right now. There's real kids involved, real family involved, and I want the best for them. I want the best for Taylor's kids. I want the best for Taylor."
Paul, aged 31, had made history as the first lead chosen from outside the franchise when announced as The Bachelorette star in September. Her season's cancellation followed renewed domestic violence allegations that sparked widespread public backlash and media scrutiny.
The Independent has reached out to both Brad Ledford and a representative for Madison Cawthorn seeking further comment on these interconnected stories of reality television, political history, and personal tragedy.
