This Morning guest Ashley James became visibly emotional and broke down in tears during Friday's episode of the ITV programme, as she reacted to the arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. The former Prince was detained on suspicion of misconduct in public office on Thursday, February 19, making headlines across the nation.
Emotional Outburst on Live Television
During the February 20 broadcast, presenters Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary opened the show by discussing the breaking news of Andrew's arrest. Ashley James, appearing as a guest, struggled to contain her emotions as she admitted, "It feels personal." She explained that watching the events unfold had left her feeling very emotional, before tears interrupted her speech.
Connection to Epstein and Survivor Justice
Wiping away her tears, Ashley continued, highlighting the broader context of her distress. "There's a reason I feel so upset about it. I think it’s because so many of us have watched the survivors of Jeffrey Epstein try to get justice and I felt a huge sense of relief yesterday watching Andrew be arrested," she stated. She clarified that his arrest pertains to state matters, not the alleged sexual abuse involving Virginia Giuffre, who has since passed away.
Ashley emphasised the delayed justice for victims, noting, "I think the fact that it took her so long and she is no longer here for justice to be served, as Virginia's brother said yesterday, this feels like the thread that is slowly starting to be unravelled and hopefully we will see accountability." She added that the situation feels personal for many women and girls due to the atrocities linked to Epstein and those complicit.
Personal Trauma and Systemic Critique
Opening up about her own experiences, Ashley revealed, "It feels personal because as a survivor of sexual assault, you question the system. You question the system that makes it so difficult for survivors to speak out." She praised the bravery of Virginia Giuffre and other survivors, suggesting that without their courage, the revelations about Andrew might not have surfaced.
She further commented, "But also so many other things that hopefully will also come out and we want to see accountability and we want to know that the law and the system doesn't protect people in power. It protects us." Ashley commended King Charles for his stance on following the law, stressing that accountability should apply equally, regardless of status.
Arrest Details and Aftermath
Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was released from police custody over 11 hours after his arrest. Thames Valley Police confirmed they will continue searching his former home in Berkshire as part of the investigation. The arrest has sparked widespread discussion on legal accountability and the treatment of high-profile individuals.
