Ant McPartlin Opens Up On Sobriety And Turning 50

Anthony McPartlin, known to millions as one half of Ant and Dec, has spoken candidly about his journey to sobriety and turning 50. In an exclusive interview, the entertainer reflected on his drink-driving conviction in 2018, which saw him fined £86,000 and banned from driving for 20 months after crashing into two cars while more than twice the legal limit.

McPartlin, now 50, admitted he had been addicted to alcohol and prescription drugs, including OxyContin, tramadol and morphine, and had previously sought treatment in 2017. Following the crash, he withdrew from all television commitments and entered rehab. His partner Declan Donnelly, 43, became emotional during the interview, saying he had considered a solo career but ultimately wanted McPartlin to return healthy and happy.

The pair, who have been a double act for over 30 years, described their friendship as the foundation of their success. Donnelly said: 'We always said our career was built on our friendship and that our friendship was the secret of our success.' McPartlin added that he had 'cried too many tears' during the difficult period.

McPartlin's drink-driving crash in March 2018 left several people with minor injuries, including a nine-year-old boy who screamed 'I am dying, Mummy'. The driver of one of the cars, Dr Audrey Ng, said in a victim impact statement that she was 'horrified that someone could drive so dangerously'.

Despite the setback, the duo reunited for television work in December 2018 and have continued their career together. McPartlin said turning 50 had given him a new perspective, and he remains focused on his sobriety and his partnership with Donnelly.
