Manchester brothers jailed for fatal road race in Wales

Two brothers from Manchester have been jailed for causing the death of a father in a catastrophic road race on a busy road in Wales. Abubakr Yusaf, 31, and his brother Umar Yusaf, 35, were sentenced at Mold Crown Court on Friday.

Fatal Collision

In November 2024, the brothers were racing each other home from Aberystwyth to Manchester in separate cars. Witnesses reported dangerous overtakes, excessive speed, tailgating, and flashing headlights at other drivers.

Shortly after both took a bend on the wrong side of the road, Abubakr's BMW collided head-on with a Toyota driven by Rhys Jenkins on the Belan straight. Jenkins died from catastrophic injuries, and his nine-year-old son, a passenger, was airlifted to hospital and treated for 10 days.

Sentencing

Abubakr Yusaf was sentenced to 14 years in prison after being found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving, causing serious injury by dangerous driving, and causing death whilst uninsured. His brother Umar was jailed for two years and nine months for causing death by careless driving and causing serious injury by careless driving.

Both brothers fled the scene in Umar's Audi S4 but Umar returned within 40 minutes, telling a PCSO the person responsible was with him. An investigation by Dyfed-Powys Police determined that while Umar's car was not directly involved in the collision, his competitive driving contributed significantly to the fatal incident.

Police Statement

Sergeant Sara John from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “The sentences passed today cannot undo the tragic loss suffered by Rhys’s family, who have shown remarkable strength throughout this investigation and court process. I hope that today’s outcome provides them with some closure as they begin to move forward with their lives, which have been changed forever.”

She added: “The actions of Abubakr and Umar Yusaf on that day were catastrophic. Their choice to drive in the manner they did shows their utter disregard towards other road users. The impact of their actions can never be underestimated.”
