Britain's Got Talent judge and Heart Radio presenter Amanda Holden has opened up about a painful romantic misstep from her past, admitting that setting up an ex-boyfriend with a close friend "absolutely killed" her emotionally.
A Confession on Air
During a candid discussion on the Heart Radio Breakfast Show, which she co-hosts with Jamie Theakston, Holden was asked by co-star Ashley Roberts if she had ever discovered a friend dating a former partner. The 54-year-old television personality did not hold back, revealing a story of regret and heartbreak.
The Setup That Backfired
"I had an ex that I was keen on, and I fixed him up with one of my friends, which absolutely killed me. I don't know why I did that," Holden confessed. She explained that, at the time, she had moved on and was seeing someone else, but still felt a strong connection to her former boyfriend.
Her intention was to play matchmaker, believing the pair would be a good fit. However, upon seeing them together, she was overwhelmed with regret. "Sort of. Even though I had moved on and was seeing somebody else, I thought they would work together. But then when I saw them together, I was like, 'What are you doing?'" she added, describing the emotional turmoil.
Context of the Conversation
Holden made this personal revelation as she and her co-stars were discussing celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay's account of how he met his wife, Tana. In his new documentary, Being Gordon Ramsay, Ramsay recalled that Tana was initially his friend's girlfriend, but he was immediately captivated by her beauty and personality.
Ramsay described Tana as looking "like a young Julia Roberts" and bringing a level of excitement he had never felt before. Tana, however, initially thought he was "really arrogant" and irritating. Once both were single, she gave him a chance, and they married in 1996, now sharing six children.
Reflections on Love and Life
Reflecting on Ramsay's story, Ashley Roberts remarked, "It was meant to be," to which Holden quipped, "All is fair in love and war," highlighting the unpredictable nature of relationships.
Holden, who is happily married to music producer Chris Hughes with two daughters, first met her husband in Los Angeles in 2003 and married him five years later. This followed the end of her eight-year marriage to presenter Les Dennis, who has since remarried.
Lessons Learned
Holden's admission serves as a reminder of the complexities of love and friendship. While her gesture was meant to be kind, it ultimately led to personal heartache, a mistake she now openly regrets. Her story resonates with many who have navigated similar emotional landscapes.
