Amanda Holden has candidly discussed a moment of tension in her marriage to husband Chris Hughes, revealing that a disagreement over a household rule led to them spending time apart. The Britain's Got Talent judge shared insights into their domestic life, highlighting how even long-term partnerships face occasional clashes.
Pet Policies Spark Marital Discord
The couple, who have been married since 2008 and share two daughters, Lexi and Hollie, maintain a busy family life split between their glamorous Surrey home and a quieter countryside retreat in the Cotswolds. However, their most significant difference of opinion revolves around their beloved rescue pets.
Amanda, 55, explained that animals play a central role in her life, with their home filled with furry companions. She described her routine upon arriving home: "I kick off my heels then lie on the floor so the dogs can lick my face." The family includes two rescue dogs—Rudie, a 14-year-old Yorkshire terrier and Jack Russell cross, and Minnie, a one-year-old toy spaniel and shih tzu cross—as well as two cats.
A Strict Boundary from Chris Hughes
While Amanda happily welcomes the animals wherever they please, her husband has set a firm boundary. "I'm not fussy about where the animals are allowed but my husband is, so they all have to sleep downstairs," she admitted. This rule, however, is quickly relaxed when Chris is away. "I love it if my husband's away because then they'll sleep on the bed with me," she confessed, hinting at the underlying dispute.
The family's pets also include an older cat named Muffy, a 15-year-old Siberian, and a cat rescued from Corfu during a holiday, nicknamed Bolt for his speedy movements. Amanda's affection for her pets contrasts with Chris's more structured approach, creating a point of contention in their otherwise harmonious marriage.
Interior Design and Home Life Clashes
Beyond pet rules, the couple's differences extend to their homes' aesthetics and amenities. Their Surrey property underwent a dramatic transformation under Amanda's direction, evolving from what she called "a boring box of white" into a lavishly decorated space with chandeliers, a sweeping staircase, and high ceilings, reminiscent of the exclusive Annabel's nightclub.
In contrast, their Cotswolds home offers a softer, more muted ambiance with whites, creams, and sage tones, designed for cosy relaxation with fires, soft lighting, and large sofas. Amanda revealed that she typically has the final say in design matters, noting, "My husband's had to give up now and let me have free rein."
Luxury Amenities Lead to Further Disagreements
The family enjoys luxury amenities in both properties, including a swimming pool in Surrey and a hot tub in the Cotswolds. Yet, even these indulgences spark arguments. Amanda admitted that she uses the pool weekly, but Chris often turns down the heating, leaving it uncomfortably cold. "I've no idea what temperature it is but it's cold," she said, comparing her husband's behavior to Jim Royle from The Royle Family.
Despite these disputes, the couple has built a life that blends Amanda's bold design preferences with family comfort, navigating their differences with humor and compromise. Their story offers a relatable glimpse into the everyday challenges of maintaining a long-term relationship, even in the spotlight.
Amanda Holden will return to television screens for Britain's Got Talent, showcasing her professional persona amid these personal revelations about her home life with Chris Hughes.
