Food blogger Becca Stock, known online as Becca Eats Everything to her 680,000 YouTube followers, blind-tasted 10 different Ready Salted crisp brands and was surprised to find that Walkers came out on top, not her usual favourite Tyrrells or Kettle.
Blind tasting method
The 29-year-old transferred the contents of each product into distinctly coloured bowls before tasting, while her viewers could see which brand she was trying on screen. She remained unaware of the brand until the end of the test.
“Let's go through them all and see which one tastes the best,” she said in a YouTube video.
Brand-by-brand scores
Becca gave Tesco's standard crisps 5.5 out of 10, noting a “slight bitterness to the potato flavour”. Marks & Spencer's offering scored just 2 out of 10, as she said they “don't even taste like potato, it's like plastic”.
Kettle Chips were correctly identified and scored 7.5 out of 10, with Becca praising the crunch and salt but noting an “odd aftertaste” of oil. Morrisons' crisps earned 8 out of 10, though she noted they were “lacking a bit of salt”. Asda Essentials scored 6 out of 10, described as “good for supermarket standard”.
Tesco Finest received a 2 out of 10, with Becca saying the crisp tasted “fishy” and “wasn't nice”. Walkers, placed in a pale yellow bowl, scored a perfect 10 out of 10, with Becca praising the “strong” potato taste and “little hints of salt”, calling them “the perfect crisp”.
Lidl's offering scored 8.5 out of 10, with a “slightly nutty flavour” and a good crunch. Tyrrells, usually Becca's favourite, scored just 3 out of 10, as she laughed and said they were “so tasteless”. Tesco's budget range Stockwell & co also scored 3 out of 10, with Becca criticising the amount of salt.
Final results
Morrisons and Lidl secured third and second place respectively, outperforming well-known brands Tyrrells and Kettle. Speaking about Walkers, Becca said: “They were the best, genuinely, and I would never normally pick Walkers.”
