Tributes have been paid to an Everton fan who died after falling ill on his way home from the Blues' home match against Manchester United last weekend. A senior staff member at the club confirmed in a statement this afternoon that the supporter, who was 67 years old, became unwell on a minibus following the 2-2 draw at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Sunday, September 6.
He was taken to hospital but later died. The ECHO understands the fan's name was Bernard Benbow, also known as Ben.
Club statement
Dave Lewis, head of security and stadium safety officer at Everton Football Club, said: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of a 67-year-old supporter following yesterday’s match.
“The gentleman became unwell as he was boarding his supporters’ club minibus after the game. Despite the best efforts of the emergency services, traffic management staff and fellow supporters who came to his aid, he was taken to hospital and sadly passed away.
“On behalf of everyone at Everton Football Club, I would like to offer our sincere condolences to his family, friends and fellow supporters at this incredibly difficult time. The club is in contact with the family and will continue to offer any support we can.”
Tributes from supporters
A post on X from Everton fan account BMD Blues said Bernard was a member of Royal Blue Travels coach travel. They said: "The member of Royal Blue Travel was Bernard Benbow (Ben) from Huyton, Bernard has been following Everton since the 1960s and suddenly fell ill when on the bus waiting to leave for home."
Emergency services assisted to Bernard but unfortunately after assistance Bernard did not make it home. "As always our thoughts and prayers are with Bernard’s family and friends at this sad time."
Several supporters left messages of support to Bernard. The Everton Fan Advisory Board said: "Terribly sad news. Thoughts with all Ben's friends and family. RIP Ben."
A second fan said: "Heartbreaking, RIP Ben. Thoughts and prayers with his family and friends." A third said: "RIP Bernard. Fly high." RIP Bernard, thoughts to his family and friends, and everyone involved."
