Souness Apologises to Lineker Over Liverpool Scar Memory

Graeme Souness has apologised to Gary Lineker for a tackle that left a six-inch scar when the former footballer visited Liverpool as a young boy. The 73-year-old, who joined the Reds in January 1978, shared the memory during filming for new ITV show The Box, which launches tonight.

A Blast from the Past

Souness recalled the incident while chatting with Lineker, who played for Everton, Leicester and Tottenham during his career. He said: "We’ve done a bit of work together in the past, but he informed me of something while filming The Box.

"He asked me if I remembered a game where he was a young boy (I’m ten years older than him). He came to Liverpool as a young boy and he’d poorly controlled a ball and I was a bit naughty to him, and he rolled up his trouser leg to show a six inch scar.

"I did apologise. I did say, 'Forgive me. Is it a bit late to say sorry now!' He said, ‘Don’t apologise. I've dined out on this for many years!'"

What Is The Box?

The Box first launched in Norway in 2025 and has now arrived in the UK with 10 celebrity contestants. The show sees the famous faces locked inside individual yellow boxes before being transported to mystery locations without any preparation, warnings, or instructions.

Those starring in the show include Liverpool legend Graeme Souness, reality star Joey Essex, JLS star JB Gill and journalist Ranvir Singh. They are joined by businesswoman Sara Davies, YouTuber Danny Aarons, comedian Ellie Taylor, Chaser Jenny Ryan, former politician John Bercow and Love Island star Shakira Khan. Gary Lineker serves as host.

Why Souness Joined

Speaking about his decision to join The Box, Souness said: "It's different - it's something I've never done before, which appealed to me, alongside the unique nature of the concept. It's fun, it's family-friendly, and it's great prime time telly. What's not to like?!"

The Box launches on Saturday September 5, with episode two airing on Sunday September 6 on ITV1, ITVX, STV & STV Player.
