Arsenal and England star Bukayo Saka walked out of his BBC interview after scoring a hat-trick in the third-place play-off, helping England defeat France 6-4 to secure bronze at the World Cup. The 24-year-old winger was left speechless by a question from BBC correspondent Kelly Sommers, who attempted to soften the blow of the semi-final loss to Argentina.
Interview Incident
Sommers said: "Well played today, I know you didn't want the bronze, but it's a medal at least." Saka puffed out his cheeks, gave a wry smile, and walked off, exchanging pleasantries as he stepped away from the microphone. The interview ended abruptly as Saka showed his disappointment at not reaching the final.
Saka's Performance and Fitness
Saka had entered the tournament as a fitness concern after being pushed to the limit and playing through an injury while helping Arsenal win the Premier League. Despite scoring a hat-trick in the bronze match, he could not hide his disappointment. He said: "Of course I'd love to have played a bigger part but it's too late for that. I tried to do my talking on the pitch but it's time to move on."
He added: "Yeah, I'm fit, I'm fit. I think it's just part of the game, when you win there will be noise and when you lose, it's about how you react to it and use it as fuel, we finished strong. We built and built, had some amazing results, we fell short, it hurt a lot. We have to hold our head high."
Reaction and Aftermath
The incident has drawn attention to Saka's emotional state after the semi-final defeat. The Three Lions had beaten pre-tournament favourites France 6-4 to claim third place, but the focus remained on the missed opportunity to play for the title. Saka's walkout highlighted the intense pressure and disappointment felt by the squad.
