Ray Winstone was once arrested on suspicion of double murder while filming the BBC crime series Bergerac, a role that required him to travel between London and Jersey.
The actor, whose daughter Jaime Winstone is currently competing on Strictly Come Dancing, recounted the incident in an interview with FHM magazine years later.
Arrested during filming
"I got arrested for murder, double murder in fact. Well, it was murder and attempted murder," the Gentleman star told FHM.
"I was filming a part in Bergerac at the time, and I was travelling backwards and forwards from Jersey. But I didn't know a gang used that route to run guns, and I got pulled."
Ray, who was in his mid-20s at the time, revealed someone even identified him from a photofit. Fortunately, they quickly realised he had nothing to do with the crime and let him go.
1,500 people questioned
"They pulled 1,500 people in on the same charge - eventually, they shot a man dead who they say committed the crime," he added.
Ray began his career on stage in 1975, before making his first TV appearance in the police drama The Sweeney the following year. He went on to appear in several TV programmes, never imagining that one of them would ultimately lead to his arrest.
Strictly and social media
Ray discussed Jaime's stint on Strictly on The Romesh Ranganathan Show, admitting he initially questioned her decision to take part. "You don't want to be doing all that," he recalled telling his daughter.
The dad-of-three went on to reflect on how much the world has changed, highlighting the growing influence of social media and arguing that success is now increasingly measured by the number of followers someone has online.
"It is a different world today. I'm a dinosaur. I'm stuck back there. But today it's about how many followers you've got on Instagram or YouTube," he told Romesh.
Ray explained that when he was younger, aspiring actors would meet with a director, with casting decisions often coming down to the chemistry between them.
"You got in the room and you talked, you conversed with one another. Today they send in a tape," he continued.
"I don't know how they cast because there's got to be a chemistry between the director, the writer and the other actors, and you only get that chemistry by meeting and looking in one another's eyes and talking."
Ray added: "It is a different world. I'm not so sure it's a better world. I'm talking about from a work point of view. But I'm very proud of Jamie."
