Ray Winstone says he must 'be careful' on social media as Jaime joins Strictly
Ray Winstone: I must 'be careful' on social media amid Jaime's Strictly stint

Ray Winstone has said he has to “be careful” when posting on social media, after his daughter Jaime Winstone signed up for this year’s Strictly Come Dancing.

The 69-year-old actor, known for tough-guy roles over a five-decade career, has more than 350,000 followers on Instagram. He admitted: “When I was drinking I used to talk about Egyptian burial grounds and the pyramids. I had to stop that.”

Initial doubts about Strictly

When 41-year-old Jaime told her father she was taking part in the BBC1 dancing competition, Ray initially tried to discourage her. He said: “I was like, ‘what are you doing that for? You don’t want to be a celebrity. You want to be an actress don’t you?’

“She said ‘Dad it is different today. That is the way in.’ And it is now about how many things you have got on your Instagram. It’s a different world.”

Proud father

Ray, who has been married to wife Elaine for 47 years and gave up drinking to spend more meaningful time with his family, said he is “very proud” of his daughter and her Strictly journey.

The star of films such as Quadrophenia, Sexy Beast and Black Widow added: “I have always thought my children should have their own opinions rather than listening to mine. It makes me very proud when my kids say something I don’t agree with.

“I learn more from my kids than perhaps what my kids learnt from me. Jaime is so brave in what she is doing. It is hard work. That’s graft.”
