Veteran broadcaster Ewan Dixon died in hospital on September 24, months after a freak horse riding accident in Victoria. His passing was confirmed this week by his friend and former colleague Gavin Wood.
Dixon, known for his work at Triple M, died at Angliss Hospital in Upper Ferntree Gully. Wood shared the news on Facebook, along with a message from Dixon's disability support worker, Jason Davis.
Support worker's message
Wood wrote: "I have just received this sad message from his disability support worker, Jason Davis. Ewan was involved in a very bad horse accident. He fought so hard to get fit and well but the injuries were too severe. He was my panel operator at Gold FM in Melbourne and did many on-air gigs around the country."
Davis's message read: "I am a disability support worker and had been working with Ewan for the past three months or so. I'm not sure his passing has been communicated to the people it should have, hence why I am reaching out. He spoke of you often."
Career across Australia and the US
Davis added: "I only knew Ewan for a very short time; however, we hit it off," recalling their passionate conversations about music. "I'm not sure if the appropriate people are aware of his passing and have had the opportunity to celebrate his life and friendship."
Dixon had worked for various stations across Australia and the US. He was best known for his work at Melbourne's Gold 104.3, Brisbane's B105, and Triple M Melbourne. In the '90s, he also enjoyed a stint on RadioHits in the US.
Tributes from fans and colleagues
Fans paid tribute to Dixon in response to Wood's Facebook post. One wrote: "Oh no, I had no idea he had been in a tragic accident. He loved a chat! Lovely, caring person. Rest in peace, Ewan."
A second commented: "Remembering the laughs we had during those years of the GWRS on Gold 104.3, and the enthusiasm and passion he had for radio. Thanks for sharing this news, Gavin." Podcaster Rob Hartnett remarked: "Ewan was a legendary twiddler of knobs and switches and made me sound half decent during our shows together. He was also a super nice guy. Condolences to his family and friends."
