Jinny Lu, a six-year-old pug from Ukiah, claimed the title at the 2026 World's Ugliest Dog contest, held at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Santa Rosa, US. The event, now in its 50th year, celebrates the unique charm of rescue dogs rather than mocking them.
From Rescue to Champion
Jinny Lu was saved from the dog meat trade in South Korea before finding a loving home. Her owner, Michelle Grady, took home the $5,000 prize, approximately £3,700. The pug is known for "arguing" with her own reflection, according to contest organisers.
More Than a Contest
The competition isn't about "making fun of ugly dogs" but "having fun with some wonderful characters," organisers said. Jinny Lu has been visiting schools with other rescue pug friends to teach children about adopting pets, and has also brought joy to hospice patients and people in memory care facilities.
"She absolutely loves competition, meeting everyone, and everything the event stands for," her owner said.
Other Notable Contestants
Otto, a Chihuahua mix with a severe double cleft lip and cleft palate, impressed judges but didn't win. Pinky, an albino Pomeranian Chihuahua, took second place. Other participants included Klara, Little Prince Wonder, and Scooter, held by owner Linda Elmquist. The event highlighted the benefits of adopting rescue dogs, with all contestants getting their moment on stage.
