Oven chips can be significantly improved by sprinkling them with a single ingredient after cooking, according to a senior recipe developer. Mimi Morley, Senior Recipe Development Manager at HelloFresh, recommends using a spice bag seasoning to elevate the flavour of frozen oven chips.
The Simple Ingredient That Transforms Oven Chips
Morley said: "I just love a spice bag, so this is always going to be my answer! Even if you don’t have the other ingredients of a great spice bag (peppers, onions, fried chicken etc), sprinkling a spice bag seasoning on your chips at the end will elevate them so high you won’t go back!"
The trick involves adding the seasoning immediately after removing the chips from the oven. The residual heat helps the spices adhere to the surface and release their essential oils, enhancing the flavour.
Why This Method Works
Spices add complexity, warmth, and depth that plain salt alone cannot provide. For best results, some suggest coating the chips in a little oil before dusting with the spice blend, as oil acts as a glue and helps release the spices' essential oils during cooking. However, frozen chips often already contain oil, so baking them first and then adding the seasoning while hot is effective.
This advice is part of a broader trend of chefs sharing tips for making tastier oven chips. The method is simple, effective, and can transform a basic side dish into a flavourful addition to any meal.
