Ollie Robinson held his player-of-the-match champagne and signed autographs for fans at Lord's, but his comeback performance raises questions about whether he can be trusted to deliver consistently for England.
A Short-Lived Test Match
By 1pm, the only play left at Lord's was on the wrong side of the stands, where spectators batted with umbrellas in front of bins. The Test match ended before lunch, lasting only 996 balls—the shortest game at Lord's to include all 40 wickets falling in over a century. Pakistan's Hanif Mohammad batted about that many balls by himself against West Indies in Barbados in 1958, drawing murmurs from older fans about the modern generation's inability to build an innings.
Emilio Gay was the only batsman to spend as long as two hours at the crease, and even he needed good fortune. The spinners from both sides did not bowl a single over between them, a feat last seen in England during a Test against West Indies at Headingley in 1988.
Robinson's Match-Winning Performance
With several quicks taking five-wicket hauls—Kyle Jamieson, Nathan Smith, and Gus Atkinson—the man-of-the-match award went to Ollie Robinson, who earned it with the best Test figures of his career: seven for 77, including five for 39 in the first innings and three wickets in four balls during a crucial over. He dismissed Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra lbw, with Kane Williamson caught at short leg in between. Given England had just been bowled out for 140, it was the defining moment of the match.
On this pitch, Robinson's best deliveries were unplayable. On the third morning, he had Glenn Phillips laughing at the futility after finding the outside edge with an away-swinger, then the inside edge with an in-swinger next ball. Robinson had been playing Sydney Grade cricket during the winter.
A History of Fitness Concerns
Conway's wicket was Robinson's first in Test cricket since dismissing Alex Carey at Lord's in the 2023 Ashes. He played only 11.2 overs at Headingley before leaving with a back spasm, and 13 overs at Ranchi in 2024. He has missed 31 Tests in two years, missing out on prime years of his career.
Trust is fragile. Robinson lost it at Ranchi when his bowling was so ineffective that Ben Stokes did not use him in the second innings. Similar issues occurred in the 2022 Ashes at Hobart, where he bowled only eight overs due to a back spasm, and he missed a three-Test series in the West Indies later that year. His back problems forced him off again at Headingley in 2023.
Senior players felt they could not rely on him to bowl his overs. Stokes and Brendon McCullum forgive anything but lack of effort. Robinson also alienated some teammates by launching a podcast offering behind-the-scenes insights after a messy public separation from his family.
What the Future Holds
Robinson's recall means his Lord's performance must be measured over the coming weeks. England will judge him on his ability to bowl when batsmen are set and the innings is deep, requiring third, fourth, and fifth spells. He is said to have taken strength and conditioning more seriously since becoming Sussex's red-ball captain, but England have heard similar promises before. In 2022, Robinson claimed he had become a "gym freak" to return to the team. Time will tell if this time is different.
