Interior designer Sara Parker has shared five common bathroom decorating mistakes that 'make them look cheap', along with tips to fix them without spending a fortune.
Decanting products
For her first tip, Sara said: "Do not underestimate the power of decanting." She demonstrated how items like bath salts, cotton buds, and cotton wool pads can be transferred into matching glass jars. "I just think everything looks shakier in a glass jar," Sara said.
Be creative with your bin
Sara encouraged people to think outside the box when choosing a bathroom bin. "I think a bathroom trash can is where you can actually have a little bit of fun in your bathroom, and bring in some more personality," she said. She recommended vintage-style bins or alternatives like baskets or planters. "There are actually so many things that you can use as a trash can if you just believe in it hard enough," she added.
Avoid matching sets
Sara advised against bathroom accessory matching sets, such as matching toothbrush holders and soap dispensers. "We can do way better," she said. She explained that items should have a 'found and collected look' rather than being overly uniform. She suggested vintage pieces with character, such as metal toothbrush holders, paired with matching metal items while retaining distinct appeal.
Pick the right shower curtain
Sara recommended selecting a shower curtain that doesn't resemble a traditional one too closely and hanging it correctly. She loves a pinch pleat for a shower curtain and advised hanging it near the ceiling like conventional curtains. She also suggested double shower curtains for a luxe look: "This is so luxe, so chic."
Add art pieces
Sara encouraged treating bathroom décor like any other room, including incorporating works of art. "Art just gives any single space soul and lets it breathe in a deep breath of personality," she said. "So do not forget your bathroom."
