Newcastle's Party Scene in 2006: 21 Throwback Photos

Archive photos from 2006 show Newcastle living up to its party reputation, with scenes of friends enjoying nights out that would look familiar today. The images, captured by Chronicle photographers, include big group outings, hen parties and people in fancy dress, with many taken during September and October of that year.

Music and fashion of the era

Some of the outfits in these 20-year-old pictures would not look out of place now. The party mood back then would have been set by hits such as Beyoncé's Déjà Vu, Justin Timberlake's SexyBack and Scissor Sisters' I Don't Feel Like Dancin'. Girls Aloud's Something Kinda Ooooh was soon to join the playlists, while revellers might also remember Meat Loaf's It's All Coming Back to Me Now, James Morrison's Wonderful World and Amy Winehouse's Rehab.

That autumn's soundtrack followed on from that summer's Live 8, which marked 20 years since Live Aid with more big names performing around the world, including in London.

Sporting memories of 2006

2006, the year Nintendo launched the Wii console, was also a big one for sport. Ahead of the Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, attention had been on the World Cup. England crashed out, but there was drama in the final as France's Zinedine Zidane was sent off after head-butting Marco Materazzi of the Italian side, which went on to win on penalties.

Closer to home for Geordie fans, 2006 saw Alan Shearer play his last game and retire as Newcastle United's record goal-scorer. The throwback gallery offers a chance to see if you made an appearance in the autumn 2006 nightlife scenes.
