The squad, depleted by World Cup absences, faced Inter, K-League All Stars, and Atletico. Seven of City's biggest stars stayed home after reaching the final weekend of the World Cup with their national teams. Despite this, the team showed progress under new manager Enzo Maresca, growing in confidence across Hong Kong and Korea.
Goalkeepers and Defenders
Donnarumma played most of the time and made decent saves, though questions remained over some goals conceded. Bettinelli had a half in Korea and noted the heat left him out of breath from shouting instructions. Reis had a successful trip and likely did enough to stay with the squad for the season. Henderson-Hall got a few minutes but is unlikely to be near the first team this season.
Khusanov had Maresca laughing after slamming an Inter penalty against the post, and was solid before leaving early. Dias showed rustiness after joining late but led the team well. Gvardiol was encouraged to play high despite the heat. Mfuni impressed at a young age, while Alleyne was nudged out by Reis and may get another loan.
Midfielders and Forwards
Ait-Nouri was decent and enjoyed his goal against Atletico, though he needs to hone his finishing. Braithwaite is building on a strong year as Under-18s captain. Lewis surely needs a move for regular play, but Maresca had a good look at him. Kovacic's ball-carrying and through balls mark him out, even if he sometimes dribbles into trouble.
Gonzalez did fine but was always a substitute. Heskey played a few minutes and may move on loan or permanently. Reijnders took his chances, looking bright as a No.8 with goals and assists. Foden warmed up slowly but showed smile and swagger playing centrally by the third game. McAidoo impressed in just one half, exciting Maresca and fans.
Echeverri couldn't reach his FA Cup final and Club World Cup levels. Savinho was broadly positive but fell into the trap of being good without deciding games. Monga had a promising start, unfortunate to have a goal ruled out in Korea. Semenyo was the outstanding player, brilliant on either flank and good with younger teammates. Mubama scored two goals, picked ahead of Mukasa. Sangare was tidy in the first game. Marmoush had a quiet time against K-League All Stars but scored two against Atletico.
