Kilmarnock's Take A Bow performing arts centre has been named the winner of the Scottish Civic Trust Community Regeneration Award 2026, recognising its outstanding contribution to community-led regeneration, sustainability and social impact.
Award-winning transformation
The award highlights the remarkable makeover of the former New Farm Loch Community Centre, which was completed in 2025. The centre had faced closure in 2018 before the group took charge. The £2.7m overhaul has turned the venue into a vibrant, modern and environmentally sustainable hub for the people of Kilmarnock.
Community at the heart
Co-chief executive Martyn Hay said: "Winning the Scottish Civic Trust Community Regeneration Award is an incredible honour for everyone involved with Take A Bow. This award belongs to our community, whose vision, passion and commitment helped shape every stage of the project."
Take A Bow carried out extensive community consultation and collaboration, creating a welcoming space that supports performing arts, youth development, additional support needs programmes, community events and intergenerational activities.
Impact and future
Since reopening, the centre has welcomed tens of thousands of visits and significantly expanded its range of services. The redevelopment has also dramatically improved the building's environmental performance, reducing energy consumption while preserving an important community asset.
Co-chief executive Natalie Boyce added: "Together, we've created more than a building—we've created a place where people can belong, thrive and realise their potential."
The award recognises the trust's commitment to community ownership, inclusive design and sustainable regeneration. By breathing new life into an ageing building rather than replacing it, the project demonstrates how community organisations can successfully lead regeneration while delivering lasting social, environmental and economic benefits.
