A taste test comparing Kellogg's Corn Flakes with supermarket versions from Asda, Tesco, Lidl, Aldi and Marks and Spencer found Lidl's cereal matched the branded product in look and taste at a fraction of the price.
The test, conducted by Mia O'Hare, Senior Audience Writer for Spare Time, compared the cereals before and after adding milk to assess flavour and texture. Prices ranged from 95p for Tesco, Marks and Spencer, Aldi and Lidl to £1.15 for Asda and £2.45 for Kellogg's from Asda.
Asda Ranks Last
Asda's cornflakes came bottom of the rankings with a rating of 5/10. Although the cereals looked identical to those from Tesco, Marks and Spencer and Aldi, Asda's version had a different flavour. It was described as not as sweet or crunchy as Kellogg's and tasted quite dry, with the blandness and lack of sweetness costing it points.
Tesco, Marks and Spencer and Aldi Tie
Tesco, Marks and Spencer and Aldi all scored 7/10. Tesco's cornflakes were crunchy and not as dry as Asda's, with a lighter colour. Marks and Spencer's version had a nice texture that wasn't too firm but lacked the sweetness of Kellogg's and tasted too similar to Tesco and Aldi to stand out. Aldi's cereal had a firm texture with a pleasant crunch but also lacked Kellogg's sweetness and tasted slightly dry.
Kellogg's Scores 9/10
Kellogg's Corn Flakes scored 9/10, praised for the classic mixture of sweet and saltiness and a crunch that was not too firm or too soft. Many supermarkets struggled to match Kellogg's in flavour, making it stand out against the majority.
Lidl Wins at 10/10
Lidl's cornflakes scored 10/10 and were named the winner. The cereal was much darker in colour than the other supermarket options but matched Kellogg's. It had the same taste and texture as the brand, and at 95p, the tester saw no reason to choose the branded version next time.
