Lidl cornflakes beat Kellogg's in supermarket taste test

A taste test comparing supermarket cornflakes with Kellogg's found that Lidl's own-brand version beat the iconic cereal on both flavour and price. The 95p Lidl cornflakes scored 10/10, while Kellogg's, priced at £2.45 from Asda, scored 9/10.

Asda's cornflakes, at £1.15, ranked last with a 5/10 rating. Tesco, Marks and Spencer and Aldi all scored 7/10, with each priced at 95p.

How the cereals compared

The taste test sampled each cereal both dry and with milk to capture the full flavour experience. Despite expecting similar tastes across the board, the tester discovered some unexpected variations.

Asda's cornflakes appeared visually identical to Tesco's, Marks and Spencer's and Aldi's offerings, but the flavour profile differed noticeably. Compared to Kellogg's, they lacked sweetness and crunch, tasting rather dry.

Lidl's winning formula

Tesco's cornflakes delivered satisfying crunch without Asda's dryness and presented a pleasant alternative to the branded option, though they had a noticeably paler appearance. Marks and Spencer's cornflakes offered a pleasant texture that wasn't overly hard, but were less sugary than Kellogg's and bore too much resemblance to Tesco and Aldi to distinguish themselves.

Aldi's cereal had a solid texture that delivered a satisfying crunch, but also lacked the sweetness found in Kellogg's and had a somewhat dry quality.

Kellogg's Corn Flakes achieved the traditional balance of sweet and salty notes alongside the ideal crunch level, neither too hard nor too soft. Most supermarkets failed to replicate Kellogg's flavour profile, making it superior to the bulk of alternatives.

Lidl's cornflakes were instantly noticed to resemble the branded product most closely, appearing considerably darker than rival supermarket versions. Among all supermarket alternatives, Lidl succeeded in replicating Kellogg's appearance and flavour, delivering identical taste and consistency to the brand. At 95p, the tester concluded there's little justification for selecting the brand going forward.
