Roy Keane and Micah Richards drum up World Cup excitement in Bolton town centre. Sky Sports used the town as a backdrop for a new TV advert with help from the borough's 'film office'.
Filming in Bolton
There were plenty of ‘double takes’ from shoppers queuing for their lunchtime pasty in Bolton as ex-footballers Roy Keane and Micah Richards filmed a World Cup advert in the town centre. Former Manchester United and Republic of Ireland captain Keane and Richards, who played for England and Manchester City, were filmed along Churchgate and Le Mans Crescent for a Sky advert, drumming up excitement ahead of the World Cup, which starts in Mexico on Thursday.
Bolton town centre has been a hive of filming activity in recent years, making the most of the town’s iconic architecture and filming friendliness. The town’s reputation as the ‘Hollywood of the North’ has seen the establishment of the Bolton Film Office, which supports and grows the town’s screen sector by attracting film and TV productions. The council said the office showcases Bolton’s diverse locations, connecting industry professionals with local talent and businesses.
World Cup Celebrations
Late temporary changes to licensing rules have also been introduced, which will mean viewers can enjoy watching the World Cup – which takes place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico – at their local pub. The council said it is hoped the temporary changes will have a huge impact on Bolton’s night-time economy, particularly for popular venues along Churchgate, where the advert was filmed.
Filming for the advert also occurred at The Market Place, where they turned the patio into a World Cup celebration, complete with bunting and a brass band. The Market Place will also be hosting family-friendly activities and football-related competitions.
Coun Debbie Newall, Executive Cabinet Member for Culture, said: “Bolton continues to flourish as a filming destination. Attracting big football personalities and having our local landmarks featured on national television is a great way to get Bolton immersed in World Cup fever.”
