Australian cricketer David Warner has been charged with drink-driving after allegedly recording more than twice the legal alcohol limit during a roadside test in Sydney.
Police said Warner was driving a van on Easter Sunday when it stopped short of a breath testing unit at Maroubra, in the city's east. Officers approached the vehicle and administered a breath test, which returned a positive result. He was arrested and taken to Maroubra police station, where a further test allegedly showed a blood alcohol reading of 0.104.
The 39-year-old is due to appear at Downing Centre local court in Sydney on 7 May.
Warner has been captaining the Karachi Kings in the Pakistan Super League, scoring 50 in their most recent match in Lahore on 2 April. This follows a standout Big Bash season with the Sydney Thunder, where he averaged 86.6 and was named captain of the tournament's official team.
Formerly one of Australia's most destructive batsmen, Warner retired from Test cricket in 2024 and now works as a Fox Cricket commentator. He scored 8,786 runs in 112 Tests at an average of more than 44, including a highest score of 335 not out against Pakistan. His career has also been marked by controversy, including a suspension for ball-tampering in South Africa and an admission that he punched future England captain Joe Root in a Birmingham nightclub in 2013.
