Welsh rugby legend Jonathan 'Jiffy' Davies has set his sights on raising £100 million for Velindre Cancer Centre after the latest fundraising event added another £120,000 to the total.
The former Wales international has now helped generate £65 million for the Cardiff cancer centre through almost two decades of fundraising efforts.
Latest event boosts total
Davies shared a photograph of himself and his wife, Jay, on his Instagram story, writing: "Another £120k raised to add to the £65million. Next target £100million."
The event at Cardiff City Stadium featured performances from Manic Street Preachers frontman James Dean Bradfield and West End star Sophie Evans, with Davies also addressing the audience.
Craig Maxwell, the terminally ill former Welsh Rugby Union commercial director diagnosed with incurable and inoperable lung cancer in September 2022, was also part of the evening. The legacy of Dr Tom Crosby was remembered; Crosby OBE, who worked at Velindre Cancer Centre for decades, has been described as a "much-loved and highly respected consultant" whose legacy "will be felt for many years to come".
Sheen's emotional tribute
Michael Sheen delivered an emotional video message praising Davies' 19 years of dedication to the cancer centre. In the message, shared by Jiffy from Emyr Afan's Instagram, Sheen said: "Velindre know him as the man who always turned up."
"From bike rides and fundraising dinners to major campaigns and countless events, his time, energy and influence to a cause he truly believed in. Together, that dedication has helped raise an extraordinary £65million."
Sheen added: "But his legacy is not measured in pounds. It's measured in the patients reported and the families comforted - and hope provided to the countless people facing cancer. Jiffy, thank you for your generosity, your leadership, your humour and your friendship. For 19 remarkable years you have carried the Velindre badge with pride and inspired thousands to follow your lead. Player, president and above all, a true friend of Velindre. Diolch, Jiffy."
