ITV has confirmed the return of the beloved music-based game show Name That Tune after 29 years off-air. The iconic programme will be hosted by Alison Hammond, who shared her excitement with fans.
Show's history and revival
Name That Tune first launched in the USA in 1952, before airing on ITV in the UK in 1976. Tom O'Connor was the first presenter, with Lionel Blair taking over in 1984. The show saw two contestants test their music knowledge on a range of songs, with Maggie Moone and Irish group Sheeba singing the tunes players had to guess. The original ITV run ended in 1987, and a revival on Channel 5 with Jools Holland aired from 1997 to 1998.
Now, ITV has announced the show will return to screens in 2027. Announcing the news on social media, the broadcaster said: "Alison Hammond hosts a brand-new series of the iconic Name That Tune! Expect fast-paced rounds and plenty of 'shout at the screen' moments as members of the public try to identify the biggest hits on the planet in just a few notes. Coming soon to ITV1 and ITVX."
Celebrity reactions and host's statement
The post was liked by over 16,000 users, including TV presenters Emma Willis, Ben Shephard and Ranvir Singh. Comments came from Coleen Nolan, who said "Yesss girl can't wait," while Scarlett Moffatt added "Yessss" and Carol Vorderman commented "Omg what a show."
Alison Hammond, known for roles on This Morning, The Great British Bake Off and For the Love of Dogs, said: "As a massive music lover, my biggest challenge as a host will be trying not to grab the mic and start singing along when one of my all-time favourite tunes comes on!"
She added: "And trust me… that will take serious self control! I grew up absolutely loving the original show so being part of this now feels like a real full-circle moment. I cannot wait to get into the studio, put the contestants through their paces, and see who really knows their music. And let me tell you, being joined by the super-talented Name That Tune band, who'll be belting out some of the biggest songs on the planet in their own unique, electric style… oh, it's going to be next-level. Bigger, louder, and more feel-good than ever this is going to be EPIC!"
What to expect
Katie Rawcliffe, director of entertainment, reality and daytime at ITV, said: "Name That Tune is such an iconic brand we are excited to be bringing this refreshed global format to the UK audience. It's a fun family series that not only sees contestants challenged in the studio, but viewers can play along with all the family, providing a unique playlist that spans generations."
Name That Tune will air on ITV and ITVX in 2027.
