Harry Styles honoured his late One Direction bandmate Liam Payne by performing an unreleased song he wrote about their friendship for the first time on the second anniversary of his death.
The Grammy-winning singer, 32, debuted the emotional track, titled What Is Enough, during his sold-out show at New York's Madison Square Garden on Friday night.
Harry is currently playing a residency at the iconic venue as part of his record-breaking Together, Together tour, but the latest performance took a deeply personal turn as he paused to remember his former bandmate.
A personal moment on stage
Liam passed away on 16 October 2024 while holidaying in the Buenos Aires neighbourhood of Palermo in Argentina. He died after falling from a third-floor balcony, with pathologists later discovering that he had multiple substances in his system.
With a spotlight shining on him, Harry told the audience how much his friendships had meant to him before revealing he had lost someone close to him two years earlier.
"I feel incredibly proud when I get to look up there and see my name up there. There are so many people in my life, friends and people that I've worked with, that I wouldn't have been able to do this without. And two years ago today, I lost one of those friends."
"So many people who have touched my life in such special ways and who I wouldn't be here without. I'm gonna play you a song I wrote for my friend about two years ago, if that's all right."
Encouraging support
The crowd responded with cheers as Harry reflected on the loss, with fans hearing the unreleased song for the first time.
Wearing a royal blue jumper with a red collar, the singer also used the moment to encourage those watching to support one another through difficult times.
"I'm sure a lot of you have been through similar things. I hope you haven't," he said. "But really, it's just about looking after each other."
Harry went on to acknowledge the many people who had made a difference in his life, thanking those who had helped him along the way. He then introduced the song, telling the audience: "I'm gonna play you a song I wrote for my friend about two years ago, if that's all right."
Fans react to the debut
The announcement was met with loud cheers and applause before Harry picked up his guitar and began performing What Is Enough.
The reflective track featured emotional lyrics as his band provided a melodic backing, creating a poignant moment during the New York show.
Fans who shared footage of the performance online were quick to praise the song, with many describing it as "beautiful".
Harry and Liam rose to worldwide fame alongside Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik in One Direction. The group became one of the biggest boybands in the world before going on hiatus in 2016, allowing its members to pursue solo careers.
Harry launched his solo career in 2017, scoring UK number one success with his debut album and single. His 2022 album, Harry's House, went on to win both a Grammy Award and a Brit Award, further cementing his status as one of music's biggest stars.
