Boyzone fans have fiercely defended Mikey Graham after he missed most of the band's final concerts over the weekend. The 53-year-old singer faced online criticism for not appearing on stage for the full duration of the shows at London's Emirates Stadium on Friday and Saturday.
Final Reunion Concerts
The concerts were marketed as a full reunion for the first time in nearly a decade, but Shane Lynch, Ronan Keating, and Keith Duffy initially performed as a trio. Mikey only joined mid-way through for a handful of songs and appeared again at the end as the band bid farewell. Some fans expressed disappointment at not seeing all four members throughout the entire show.
Fans Rally on Social Media
Many supporters took to social media to defend Mikey, who has previously spoken openly about his mental health challenges. One fan wrote on X: "What really bothers me is the awful comments about Mikey Graham. Having money or success doesn't make someone immune to personal battles. Mocking someone when they're down is as low as it gets." Another added: "Mikey was incredibly brave to be open about how the band affected his mental health. He shouldn't be penalised for trying to face his fears." A third fan said: "Sending so much love to Mikey. Despite health challenges, you gave your all at the Boyzone show."
Mikey's Past Struggles
Mikey had previously stated he had "no desire" to rejoin the group, known for hits like No Matter What and All That I Need. In a Sky documentary, he revealed he fell into depression after the band split in 2000. "I don't want to go back to how I felt for many years," he said. "To see them for too long would remind me of that."
Remembering Stephen Gately
Boyzone formed in 1993 and originally included Stephen Gately, who tragically died in 2009 at age 33 due to a pulmonary oedema from an undiagnosed heart condition. The band ensured Stephen was remembered during the final concerts. Keith Duffy admitted feeling "apprehensive" about rehearsals but said the worry disappeared upon entering the studio. Shane Lynch said they would be "celebrating" their late bandmate throughout the shows. Ronan Keating added that when together, it feels as if Stephen is still getting ready in his dressing room. "He's here, he's alive," he said.
