Everton's Rohl: Scousers shout 'Up the Toffees' at me

Everton star Merlin Rohl has revealed that the three-word shout he most often hears from Scousers when he is recognised in the street is "Up the Toffees". The 24-year-old spoke to the ECHO in an exclusive interview at the Lark Lane branch of Crosby Coffee.

Photobook and settling in Liverpool

Rohl discussed his new photobook, Life With Everton, which features behind-the-scenes images from his debut season with the Toffees. He was inspired to take up photography two years ago, and his passion has only developed since he moved to Merseyside.

The German has chosen to live in the heart of the city in Aigburth, which he says has helped him truly understand what it means to live in Liverpool and play for Everton.

Understanding the club through the city

He said: "When you join Everton, you need to understand how the club works, how all the goals from the people around the club are. That's why I really like to live in Liverpool, because I experience so much nice conversations with people around Lark Lane or Sefton Park or other areas in the city. That's why I really think it helps me to live here to understand the club and to understand where the people come from."

While he is now comfortable in Liverpool, it wasn't always easy, as Rohl opened up on his settling-in problems with moving to a new country where the weight of expectation was much more intense.

Favourite position and full interview

The German now couldn't be happier at Everton and discussed his favourite position, saying he is happy to play at right back or centre midfield, as long as he is helping the team.

The ECHO's full feature-length chat with Rohl is available inside one of his favourite spots on Lark Lane, and it is also available to watch on the ECHO's YouTube channel.
