Dame Kelly Holmes tops poll as most inspirational female role model

Dame Kelly Holmes has been named Britain's most inspirational female role model, finishing ahead of the Princess of Wales and Adele in a new poll.

The double Olympic champion topped the survey of women, with fellow athletics legend Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill in second place. Kate, Emma Watson and Adele completed the top five.

Footballers and other top 10 names

The Lionesses also featured prominently, with Euro 2022 winner Jill Scott in sixth and former England player Alex Scott in seventh.

Jill, 39, stressed the importance of young people having sporting heroes they can relate to. She said: "Growing up, I didn't always see footballers like me in the books I read. I know how important it is for young people to see themselves in the stories they read."

Katie Piper, Paralympic swimming champion Ellie Simmonds and Stacey Solomon also made the top 10.

Survey findings on visibility

The British Gas survey found more than a third of Brits believe there are still too few visible female role models in public life.

Some 97% said it was important for children to grow up seeing inspirational women, while 90% wanted more women in positions of influence. And 66% of parents think books, TV shows and films do not feature enough girls aspiring to be successful and ambitious.

Girls' inspirations and full list

Among girls themselves, Taylor Swift was the biggest inspiration, picked by 60%, ahead of Billie Eilish on 32% and Olivia Rodrigo on 30%.

The poll was commissioned by British Gas to mark the launch of a children's book series promoting women's football. Other famous faces in the list of 30 included Dame Mary Berry, Kate Winslet, Olivia Colman, Claudia Winkleman, Jodie Comer and Queen Camilla.
